Police Officers of the Month

June 2008
Police Officer Florie was performing a night tour when he received a radio notification of a possible house fire. Upon arrival at the location, Officer Florie observed a working house fire with a woman outside screaming that people were trapped inside the house. Officer Florie observed smoke billowing from the ground floor windows and quickly assessed the situation. He requested additional units to respond to assist him.

On March 28,Officers Brady and Hughes were assigned to plainclothes patrol in an unmarked B.S.O. vehicle. They were in the vicinity of the 7-11 store on Grand Ave. in Baldwin, when they noticed a subject emerge from the rear seat of a Nissan. They watched this subject look around suspiciously before he entered the store. The vehicle immediately backed out of the parking stall and was then positioned near a driveway exit.

Life is good and all will be well for one very lucky lady, due to the quick actions of off duty NYPD Captain Vincent LoRusso. Captain Vincent LoRusso a resident of Garden City, and his family were traveling eastbound on Stewart Avenue on July 1, 2007 at 12:40 p.m. when they drove up to a two-car collision. One of the vehicles was flipped on its side and on fire. Capt. LoRusso jumped out of his vehicle and ran toward the burning car, that he believed was occupied. Capt. LoRusso observed a woman in the driver's seat. Without a moments hesitation Capt. LoRusso attempted to extricate the elderly female driver from the vehicle but he was unable to do so due to the positioning of her body on top of the seat buckle.

November 2007
On a fall morning Police Officer Gubitosi was on patrol with a couple of his fellow officers from the 76th Precinct, Anti-Crime Unit, when they received a radio call about a man had assaulted a woman at the intersection of Smith Street and Butler. A male subject had grabbed a woman from behind and placed a serrated knife across the back of her neck. He said to the terrified victim "if they kill me, I won't have to hurt you".
