The Long Island Shields are proud to give Police Officer of the Month Awards to Police Officer Hector Bourren and Police Officer Collen LaMontagne. They demonstrated bravery in the face of danger, and their quick-thinking and professionalism protected both property and life in a Garden City Park home

The Long Island Shields are proud to present its Officer of the Month Award to Susan Porcello, a Police Officer in the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge. She is a Patrolmen's Benevolent Association Delegate, but tonight we are celebrating something she did "above and beyond" her official call of duty. She reached out to someone who had no else to help him, and she made a difference in his life.

On October 12th, 2008 Police Officer Timothy Tonkin was working a 3 X 11 tour when at approximately 2055 hrs. he received a call to respond to a vehicle in the water near the boat ramp in Billy Joel Park in Cold Spring Harbor . Upon his arrival there was off duty Nassau County AEMT Scott Kitograd in a dingy near the submerged vehicle and Mrs. Kitograd advised Officer Tonkin there was a person inside the vehicle.

It was a bitter cold night. At approximately 12:30 AM, a 21-year-old man named Danny Hernandez began looking for a uniformed police officer. Hernandez had a baseball bat. He was looking to strike an officer and take his or her gun. Hernandez wanted this gun to commit robberies. He was a college dropout and he was in debt.

Police Officer Florie was performing a night tour when he received a radio notification of a possible house fire. Upon arrival at the location, Officer Florie observed a working house fire with a woman outside screaming that people were trapped inside the house. Officer Florie observed smoke billowing from the ground floor windows and quickly assessed the situation. He requested additional units to respond to assist him.
On March 28,Officers Brady and Hughes were assigned to plainclothes patrol in an unmarked B.S.O. vehicle. They were in the vicinity of the 7-11 store on Grand Ave. in Baldwin, when they noticed a subject emerge from the rear seat of a Nissan. They watched this subject look around suspiciously before he entered the store. The vehicle immediately backed out of the parking stall and was then positioned near a driveway exit.

Life is good and all will be well for one very lucky lady, due to the quick actions of off duty NYPD Captain Vincent LoRusso. Captain Vincent LoRusso a resident of Garden City, and his family were traveling eastbound on Stewart Avenue on July 1, 2007 at 12:40 p.m. when they drove up to a two-car collision. One of the vehicles was flipped on its side and on fire. Capt. LoRusso jumped out of his vehicle and ran toward the burning car, that he believed was occupied. Capt. LoRusso observed a woman in the driver's seat. Without a moments hesitation Capt. LoRusso attempted to extricate the elderly female driver from the vehicle but he was unable to do so due to the positioning of her body on top of the seat buckle.

On a fall morning Police Officer Gubitosi was on patrol with a couple of his fellow officers from the 76th Precinct, Anti-Crime Unit, when they received a radio call about a man had assaulted a woman at the intersection of Smith Street and Butler. A male subject had grabbed a woman from behind and placed a serrated knife across the back of her neck. He said to the terrified victim "if they kill me, I won't have to hurt you".
