Police Officer of the Month, March 2006

On Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at approximately 0755 hours, Police Officer Christopher Wiesneski, was on routine patrol in two-wheel scooter #951 in the vicinity of the Laurelton Parkway Park located at 120th Ave and 238th St.

Officer Wiesneski observed a male black subject rolling what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette. The subject was on a narrow asphalt path behind the right field fence of the Laurelton West Ballfield, which is located at the south end of the park.

Officer Wiesneski parked his scooter approximately ten feet north of the subject and approached on foot. As Officer Wiesneski approached he observed the subject was in possession of a firearm. Officer Wiesneski drew his firearm and became involved in a struggle to retain control of his own firearm with the subject.

During the ensuing struggle, Officer Wiesneski's firearm discharged one time, striking Officer Wiesneski on the inside of his left leg, near his left knee. Officer Wiesneski transmitted a 10-13, eliciting a response of numerous units. Sergeant Eugene Marcaida, 113 Precinct BRAM Supervisor, was the first supervisor on scene, and directed the removal of Officer Wiesneski and initiated the investigation into the incident. Officer Wiesneski was removed to North Shore Hospital via RMP.

The perpetrator was reported to have fled the scene southbound on a bike path that runs parallel to the west side of the Laurelton Parkway. A crime scene was established, a Level 3 Mobilization was transmitted, and an intensive, large scale search was initiated for the perpetrator. With detailed information provided by Officer Wiesneski the perpetrator was apprehended after an extensive investigation and charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

For his actions, while facing a life threatening situation, the Shields of Long Island are proud to honor as police officer of the month, Police Officer Christopher Wiesneski.
